Knee Arthroscopic Surgery

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which a small camera-equipped instrument (arthroscope) is inserted into the knee joint through tiny incisions to diagnose and treat various internal knee conditions.

Surgery Procedure

During knee arthroscopy, patients typically receive general or regional anesthesia to ensure a pain-free procedure. A small incision (about 0.5 to 1 cm) is made in the knee, through which an arthroscope is inserted to view the joint. Under visual guidance, the surgeon performs necessary diagnostic and repair procedures, such as suturing torn ligaments or meniscus and removing damaged tissue. After the surgery, the incision is closed and covered with a sterile dressing.

Conditions

When treating knee joint problems, multiple conditions may need to be addressed. These include anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, which often require surgical reconstruction; meniscus injuries, which may need repair or partial removal; and arthritis, where inflamed tissue or excess synovial fluid may be cleared. Additionally, bone spurs or structural abnormalities that interfere with joint movement may be removed to restore proper knee function.

Postoperative Recovery and Expected Outcomes

After knee arthroscopy, most patients can be discharged the same day, but regular follow-ups are needed to monitor recovery. Physical therapy is essential to improve knee strength and range of motion, gradually restoring normal activity. Patients must follow medical advice, avoid heavy loads and intense exercise. With proper rehabilitation, arthroscopic knee surgery typically relieves pain and improves joint function, allowing a return to daily and athletic activities.

All surgeries carry potential risks, including infection, bleeding, nerve injury, and joint stiffness.
It's important to understand these risks and discuss them thoroughly with your medical team.
